#Betty Boothroyd, an ex-speaker, was horrified by Bercow’s behavior. She is generally considered by members of all parties (she was Labour) to have been an outstanding Speaker.
Of course, a Speaker can be biased just as any other person can be biased. As good as Betty Boothroyd was, Michael Martin, also Labour, was not in her league and was as difficult to pry out of office as Bercow.
They will I hope view him as an outstanding Speaker among many outstanding Speakers – up there with Betty Boothroyd, and Fred Thomas.
If the Speaker does his job well he will expect to be hated by some extreme MPs on both the left and right and grudgingly admired by the rest. If they are loved by all it would be a bloody miracle.
On that basis, Bercow did a very good job during one of the most unpleasant, uncultured, uncouth periods in British parliamentary history.
